The extravaganza is not just a strict sporting event. It is part entertainment, part business and interestingly, also has an implication for some listed companies who have stakes in the franchises. At last year’s auction, Australian all-rounder Shane Watson fetched the highest price as Royal Challengers Bangalore paid Rs 9 crore for his services, while uncapped Indian Pawan Negi was the highest-rated Indian with Delhi Daredevils bagging him for Rs 8.5 crore.
Seven players -- Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Angelo Mathews, Eoin Mathews, Ishant Sharma, Mitchell Johnson, Pat Cummins -- have attracted a base price of Rs 2 crore. Jason Holder, Kyle Abbott, Trent Boult, Jonny Bairstow and Nathan Lyon have a tag of Rs 1.5 crore. The 10th edition of IPL gets underway on April 5, 2017.
Between them, team managements will be spending a total of Rs 143 crore, with each of the eight teams looking to spend anywhere between Rs 11.55 crore to Rs 23.1 crore. A maximum of 76 players, including 28 overseas, can be bought at the auction.
